Mumbai: Sen per cent in trouble: Chassis number in one of Sushmita Sen's Land Cruisers was cut and replaced with a bogus numberIt has now been established that the two disputed Land Cruisers belonging to actress Sushmita Sen have manipulated chassis numbers.
The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) received reports of the tests confirming this on Monday. The EOW had sent the two imported cars to the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) for Physical Clue Testing on July 22 after the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) found that the chassis numbers of both vehicles were different from those given by the dealer. The tests revealed that the chassis number in one of the Land Cruisers was cut and replaced with a bogus number and rewelded. In the other car, one digit had been changed.
A senior EOW official said, "The FSL reports show that the chassis numbers were tampered with. This strengthens our suspicion about the customs duty being evaded. The matter is still being probed and other wanted accused will be arrested soon."Rukmani Krishnamurthy, director, FSL, confirmed submitting the tests reports to EOW, but refused to comment on the findings.
Additional Commissioner (EOW) Sanjay Saxena said an affidavit had been filed in the court yesterday on the basis of the FSL findings.Sushmita didn't reply to MiD DAY's calls or e-mail on the matter.
Other problems
The DRI had discovered that one vehicle was a 2004 model, but was shown as a 1998 model to evade customs duty and imposed a penalty of Rs 20 lakh.
The second car was imported from Dubai in 2003. Sushmita purchased it in 2005 for Rs 56 lakh from Haren Choksi. In this case, the BMC demanded Rs 2 lakh towards Octori charges and a Rs 20 lakh penalty for flouting the rules. Sushmita challenged both penalties in the Bombay High Court, which directed the police to probe the case.
