A recent SC ruling making phone tap evidence admissible in court has given a new impetus to the Mumbai Police. Cops are now hoping to nail more than 100 dreaded gangsters, who have managed to escape from the law due to lack of evidence.
In its ruling earlier this month, the SC had said that special laws are essential in dealing with increasing terrorism and organised crime. This move will also prevent overseas gangsters, like Dawood Ibrahim's brothers Anees and Mustaqueen, from surrendering before Indian authorities and getting away easily for lack of evidence.
According to Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Rakesh Maria, cases that were held up due to lack of evidence will be reviewed. Fresh phone tapping evidence will be provided to present a water-tight case in court now, he said.
Police have recorded volumes of conversations where gangsters have threatened people and in many cases, they have led to murders. A crime branch officer revealed that 12 members of Dawood 's right-hand-man Chhota Shakeel's faction may face the heat again.
The police will also press fresh evidence against rival Chhota Rajan's lieutenant D K Rao and Vicky Malhotra. Sources said the SC order will also give fresh impetus to the investigations into the 7/11 blasts in Mumbai.
Tit for tat
While the police are gearing up to present telephonic evidence against gangsters, some gangsters are preparing to leak recorded telephonic conversations with tainted policemen. Some of these tapes are being edited in Dubai and Karachi before they are released in Mumbai.
