Yashwant Place is getting cramped, screams for space

It was a bustling shopping complex till about a year ago but today Yashwant Place is only a shadow of its earlier self. The closure of the neighbouring Chanakya cinema dealt a serious blow to the shopping centre's fortunes and now it has been hemmed in by a swanky mall and a government parking lot.
According to shopkeepers, construction of the mall on the backside of the market has blocked one of its entry points. On the other side, a parking lot of a government building has obstructed entry of shoppers. The market has been closed in from three sides, leaving only one single entry open and no parking area. And customers are opting for the more convenient Sarojni Nagar market.
SK Jain, president of the Yashwant Place Traders' Welfare Association, said, "Lack of suitable parking facility is troubling both shopkeepers and customers. Earlier, the market was approachable from various sides but now there is only one way in. Thus, most of the customers are heading towards Sarojni Nagar.
"The single entry point is a safety hazard too. Said Arun Mohan, chairman of the Yashwant Place Traders' Welfare Association, "The entry is so narrow that a fire tender cannot enter the market. As many shops are located in the basement, the situation may worsen in case of any mishap. We have requested the authorities to look into this matter."
Vijay Arora, a shopkeeper, said, "The new mall coming up in place of the Chanakya cinema hall would be equipped with latest features and facility. So we too are requesting authorities to make our market air-conditioned and provide us with better infrastructure. Work for hygienic toilets have already started."
