NEW DELHI: Amit Kumar, a resident of Darbhanga in Bihar, was confused.
He had stepped out of AIIMS's cardiothoracic and neurosciences centre for five minutes, to catch a breath of fresh air after attending to his father. But on his return, suited security guards strapped with automatic rifles and wireless communication gadgets refused to let him in. The centre was cordoned off for general public and metal detectors were put in place.
The reason -- Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had checked in for a bypass surgery at 1.45 pm on Friday.
A flurry of white Ambassadors and grey Tata Safaris, that kept zipping into India's premier medical institute, was parked outside. The lift was put out of bounds and the building was completely sanitised.
The first floor was a fortress of armed guards protecting what is called Room X -- the PM's very own Intensive Care Unit. Built in the early 1990s, it is reserved for VVIPs, mainly the PM.
Completely bullet proof, it is a more glorified version of AIIMS's super deluxe room except that it has all life saving machines like a ventilator, defibrillator and cardiac monitoring machines. Earlier known as Room D, it was on the 8th floor of the main hospital building.
"After the CNC was built in 1988, this special room was shifted here. CNC was chosen as it is both the heart and neuro centre. These are the most important complications apart from chest infection or bullet injuries. Wherever the PM is in India, the PM is brought here in case of an emergency," an AIIMS official said.
The room is around 30 feet by 30 feet and comes under a special operating zone. From Saturday, only patients and their relatives with proper ID cards will be allowed inside the building.
The room has an attached toilet, a separate dressing room, an area in front and back for the security to sanitise and an ante room with beds and sofa for guests to sit. It is equipped with a television, fridge and is centrally air conditioned. The food for the PM, however, comes from his residemce, the official said.
