This is no bikini beauty

The Miss India Worldwide pageant chooses its winner without skin show; the stress is on talent and intelligence

The moral cops shouldn't have a problem with this beauty pageant. It has glamour but no skin show.

Minus the bikini round, the Miss India Worldwide beauty contest chooses the prettiest Indian face but without making the girls strut their stuff in miniscule clothes. There is no restriction on height as well and the girl with the best performing skill is crowned the winner.

"To be crowned Miss India Worldwide you have to be pretty, talented and intelligent. Having the perfect figure is not important," said the pageant's national director Arna Ruchi Bose.

As the stress is not only on physical beauty, the bikini round is not required. "We don't have the bikini round as skin show is not an essential part of being Miss India Worldwide. Parents of most participants and even the girls themselves are not comfortable wearing swimsuits. In other beauty pageants participants have to expose. In our contest, the real Indian girl is the focus," said another national director of the pageant S Naved Yousuf.

May be it was the contest's stress on talent that brought home the international crown last year. India's Shagun Sarabhai won the title for the first time in 2008, stunning the world.

"Unlike other international beauty shows, there is no restriction on height as well. On an average, Indian women are about 5 feet 3 inches tall. We select girls from that bracket. The international standard of 5 feet 6 inches is unreasonable. Everyone cannot be Sushmita Sen. But you don't have to be Sush to have her essence. Physical handicaps like height and figure do not come in the way to be the most beautiful Indian woman," said Bose.

The final round of the 2009 contest will be held at a gala on Saturday evening where the winner will be crowned by actress Katrina Kaif. Even Kareena Kapoor will be present. Saturday's winner will get to compete in the international event to be held in Dublin in March this year.
