Budget neglects CBI, 7 per cent decrease in its funds

New Delhi, Feb 16 (PTI) The allocation of funds in the interim budget for country's premier investigating agency, the CBI, has been decreased by nearly seven per cent.
As per the total expenditure budget outlay in the interim budget, the investigating agency would have a total plan and non-plan budget of Rs 241.15 crore.

Incidentally, this is Rs 17.91 crore less than what the agency had got in 2008-09 as per the revised budget.

While the plan budget has increased to Rs 40 crore this year, up from Rs 36.14 crore last fiscal, there has been a significant decline in the non-plan budget.

Even as the non-plan expenditure budget for outlay this year is Rs 201.15 crore, it is Rs 21.77 crore less than the last year figure for the same.

The present budget outlay for CBI is seen as surprising since the government has increased the planned expenditure for most other police and paramilitary organisations.

The budgetary provisions for CBI include those for "modernisation of training centres, e-Governance, construction of office building..." The agency is currently in the process of a complete overhaul of its functioning and had planned to go completely hi-tech by later this year with procurement of latest investigating tools and technology besides going in for a bigger pool of prosecutors.
