Kolkata, Feb 14 (PTI) The Congress in West Bengal today decided to go for an alliance with the Trinamool Congress for the Lok Sabha polls, but with a rider that it has to be on "honourable" terms and that the TC has to snap all ties with the NDA.
A 45-minute meeting of its coordination committee, which was presided over by its president and External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee and attended by AICC general secretary in charge of West Bengal Mohsina Kidwai, discussed in length Trinamool chief Mamata Banerjee's recent statement that she was keen on the alliance, but would not wait indefinitely for Congress' response.
Briefing on the outcome of the meeting, state Congress working president Pradip Bhattacherjee told reporters,"People in Left-ruled West Bengal want a change and Trinamool Congress is the main opposition party. There is a need for an alliance with it, but it should be on honourable terms only." Another state working president Subrata Mukherjee told PTI that a resolution called for a secular alliance to fight the CPI(M)-led Left Front in the coming election minus any NDA partner, meaning that the Trinamool would officially announce severance of links with BJP-led NDA.
