IGNOU Online course in Spanish

NEW DELHI: The Indira Gandhi National Open University (Ignou) launched its online foreign language in Spanish on Friday. The course for other three
languages French, German and Japanese will start by July 2009 while Arabic, Persian, Chinese and Russian will commence by the end of the year.

According to Renu Bhardwaj, director, School of Humanities, the German language at present is being offered in Kerala and Tamil Nadu while Spanish which is offered online is open for all students and would start from March 2009. French language would start from July session.

Said V N Rajasekharan Pillai, vice chancellor: "The tie-up follows Ignou's initiative to launch foreign languages through its new School of Foreign Languages. We are planning to offer Arabic, Persian, Chinese and Russian. Also, planning to make other foreign languages online so that students from across the world can get access to such programmes.''

Most of the languages are being launched or going to be launched in collaboration with an institution of their respective country like Iran Cultural House for Persian language, Instituto Cervantes for the Spanish programme and Goethe MMB for German language.

According to university officials, the foreign languages are being offered under the European Framework of Reference of Languages, a standard set wherein the foreign languages offered in European countries and Brazil are of the same standard. SOURCe: http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/
