Indian documentary on one of world's biggest coalfires

New Delhi, Feb 15 (PTI) Even as raging bushfires in the southeastern Australia continue to cause a large number of deaths and wreak havoc on property, an Indian filmmaker has attempted to portray the destructive toll caused by one of the world's largest coalfire in a small Jharkhand town of Jharia.
Director Umesh Aggarwal's documentary "Underground Inferno" investigates the phenomenon of coalmine fires around the world including the one in Jharia, while critically appraising the measures used to tackle the problem.

Jharia and Centralasia in the United States are home to two of the largest coal fires in the world that continue to burn in the mines there taking a toll on the human population that lives above these hot hell-holes as well as contributing to the rising levels of global warming.

"The mine fires are like a three headed monster which cause human loss, environment degradation and a loss of precious natural resources," says Aggarwal.

Usually, mine fires are considered an unstoppable physical phenomenon with evacuation and relocation of the resident population as the sole remedial measures available. National award winning filmmaker Aggarwal's documentary, however, tells a different story. PTI
