Puducherry, Feb 16 (PTI) Puducherry Assembly Speaker R Radhakrishnan's comments and criticism of the Vaithilingam ministry at a recent press conference have evoked mixed reactions in the Union Territory with the Opposition demanding a special session of the Assembly to discuss the issue.
Radhakrishnan, an MBA graduate, elected from a rural constituency of Kuruvinatham says he feels embarrassed over non implementation of various welfare schemes meant for the poor, fishermen, students and farm labourers.
He is not prepared to accept the government's argument that paucity of funds was the major stumbling block in implementation of schemes.
The Speaker reeled out figures on the use of even allocated funds. Only 55 per cent of the total outlay of Rs 1750 crores has been spent for the current fiscal (2008-2009).
He fears that with elections to the Lok Sabha around the corner, there would be difficulty in taking up the schemes in view of the model code of conduct.
The Assembly Speaker had also expressed dissatisfaction on the performance of the government in implementation of the National rural Employment Guarantee scheme.
Power cut and delay in distribution of money to the poor to construct houses, lack of government orders for utilisation of funds under MLA Area Development scheme and also for welfare measures of the scheduled castes were some of the issues which he said should be addressed without delay. PTI
