In the first instance of its kind, a Ghaziabad court has declared a serving police official a gangster. The official, Uttar Pradesh police Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Dinesh Yadav, was the City Circle Officer in Noida during the Nithari serial killings case.
"The police have declared a number of people as gangsters in the past but this is the first time when they are getting the taste of their own medicine," said Khalid Khan, Lawyer for the NGO Samajik Vikas Samiti, which had filed a petition in the court against Yadav as more than 10 cases had been registered against him in various police stations.
The cases against Yadav include threatening the witnesses in the Nithari case and the murder of Jatin Sarkar, another key witness in the case.
"Dinesh Yadav is basically a criminal in uniform. With more than 10 cases against him, he is a fit case for being declared a gangster. The court took cognizance of our plea and has summoned him to the court on August 22," said Prem Chand Dixit, National President, Samajik Vikas Samiti.
Special judge Jogendra Singh declared Yadav a gangster and summoned him to appear before the court on August 22.
"If he comes to the court on the due date, he would be sent to jail and he would not be able to get bail," said Khan.
Yadav, who is currently serving as the Circle Office in the Police Training Centre (PTC) in Sitapur will have to go to the Allahabad High Court to get a stay on the order.
Vandana Sarkar, wife of Jatin Sarkar, found dead under mysterious circumstances in his village in Murshidabad district of West Bengal, had alleged that Yadav had threatened him just before his death. Sarkar had alleged, "Many of his (Yadav) associates used to visit us often to threaten us with dire consequences if we testified against him or Pandher in court."
The Ghaziabad district court declared ex-circle officer of Noida, Dinesh Yadav, a gangster and issued summons to appear before the court on August 22 NGO Samjik Vikas Samiti had filed the petition against him.
