My Fair Lady

Knightley may play lead in new version of "My Fair Lady"

London, Feb 13 (PTI) Actress Keira Knightley is set to play Audrey Hepburn's character in a new version of 1964 classic "My Fair Lady".

Hepburn played the flower girl Eliza Doolittle, who is transformed by language professor Henry Higgins in the classic film adapted from George Bernard Shaw's play "Pygmalion".

"The Reader" director Stephen Daldry is in negotiations to direct the film, the Daily Mail reported.

Daldry hopes to make a better film.

"It's all about Cecil Beaton's sets and costumes, isn't it? Which are fantastic- as are the songs, of course. It's a visual masterpiece - but it needs to be more than that. It's a clunky movie," he said.

Daldry's film "The Reader" is in the Oscars race this year with five nominations including the best picture.

He will work closely with Emma Thompson, who has been contracted by producers Duncan Kenworthy and Cameron Mackintosh to write a new screenplay for "My Fair Lady".

Once Daldry is officially contracted, he will, with the producers, cast an actor to play professor Henry Higgins opposite Keira's Eliza Doolittle, the paper said.

The shooting of the film will begin next year in central London. PTI
