Sudan warns NGOs to stay out of politics

KHARTOUM: Sudan on Wednesday accused unnamed NGOs working in the country of cooperating with their own governments and warned them to stay clear of Sudanese politics.

"Whether you are a national or an international NGO please do your best. Don't be involved in politics that are not yours," Humanitarian Affairs Minister Haroun Lual Ron Deng told journalists.

"We have discovered they (some NGOs) are not doing what they are supposed to do," Deng said.

"We know that some NGOs are governmental," said Sudanese Humanitarian Affairs Commission chief Hassabo Mohammed Abdel Rahman.

"We see in practice and implementation more involvement of politicians, either ambassadors or governments within these NGOs. So we are wondering is it a government NGO?"

Abdel Rahman stressed that "90 to 99 percent of NGOs" pose no problem for the Sudanese authorities.

Sudan has in the past expelled NGO workers and diplomats, especially those working in the war-ravaged western region of Darfur.

In June last year, Sudanese authorities expelled from Darfur the head of the Dutch branch of the charity Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF).

Other NGOs have been targeted by expulsions since the 2003 outbreak of the Darfur conflict, including the US agency CARE in 2007, the Norwegian Refugee Council in 2006 and Britain's Oxfam and Save the Children in 2004.

Two members of the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA) were also expelled in 2007.

Diplomats have in the past also been declared persona non grata, notably the UN special envoy to Sudan Jan Pronk who was expelled in 2006.
