Tata opens data centre

INDIAN communications provider Tata Communications on Thursday announced plans to build a US$180 million Internet data centre in Singapore that promises to create at least 50 jobs.

The Tata Communications Exchange, as it is called, will be housed in Paya Lebar Business Park and will be ready for operation early next year.

Mr Vinod Kumar, president and chief operating officer of Tata Communications, said at a press conference that the data centre will directly employ about 50 people, while 'associated employment could be three to four times as much'.

He added that the new data centre aims to provide increased communications capacity for both domestic and international companies, particularly in the banking and media sectors, in a more cost- and resource-efficient manner.

Tata Communications also launched its TGN-Intra Asia Cable System, a US$250 million project that involves a 6,700 km-long submarine cable that runs from Singapore to Japan - and connects Hong Kong, Vietnam and the Philippines along the way.

The cable can increase data and voice reliability by providing a new route for data traffic generated into and throughout the Asia Pacific.

Together, the US$430 million investments form a 'key part' of the company's plan to pump $2 billion over the next three years to expand and enhance its global infrastructure, said Tata.

Among these are planned projects to expand broadband networks in India, as well as enhance connectivity on the African coast, it added.

There are already 11 Tata Group companies operating in Singapore, and employing almost 2,000 people, said Mr Beh Swan Gin, managing director of Singapore's Economic Development Board (EDB).

He added: 'Tata's latest expansion here... represents a strong vote of confidence for Singapore, and underline the growing partnership between Tata and Singapore.'
