'Saif was so much fun. His energy was unreal'
Deepika Padukone aka Gayatri
You'd think that there would more to warm real life sweethearts Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone than mere hot water bottles, but that's what Bollywood's hot debutante would have us believe. "There was this main square where we were shooting for Bachna Ae Haseeno in freezing Italy that used to be full of tourists during the day and so, we got there at 3 am and 4 am to get that empty look. It was a lot of pain, but the results show," says Deepika, seated at the judges' podium.
We're at a set for the game show Aaja Mahi Ve - Minissha Lamba and Deepika have just sashayed in to 'Khuda Jaane' and now Ranbir Kapoor and Bipasha Basu strut to the title song and do a jig. Deepika watches, Ranbir turns slightly before the take and does a short wave. Bipasha comes over and gives her a 'hi' hug. Deepika says later in the interview, "Yeah, we've finally managed to show that actresses can get along. There wasn't much interaction on the sets, but we've been meeting everyday to promote the film. We're not the best of friends, but at least we can make conversation and help each other out!"
Despite the couple's recent tell-all in a magazine, Deepika is surprisingly coy about her relationship - even if it's only to comment on how it feels living under a microscope. "We just wanted to be open about it in that particular piece because it was our way of giving respect to our relationship and our families. But now the media should focus on our careers, not where we're going for dinners or our holidays," she says, lips pursed. Deepika relaxes when it comes to Bachna Ae Haseeno.
Playing Gayatri, a character both studying and working in Sydney, Deepika says she feels a connection. After all, she too started modelling young and has travelled the world. "I'm independent too, responsible and have opinions, though I'm only 22." The 22-year-old made her debut with Shah Rukh Khan, has finished Chandni Chowk To China with Akshay Kumar and is currently shooting with Saif Ali Khan, apart from Bachna with her beau. "Not at all! No fighting," she screws up her face, when asked about a big blow-up with Saif in London, "He's so much fun. His energy's unreal." Deepika lights up when she talks about her Chinese in CCTC. "Indian languages are similar-sounding, but I couldn't understand this! So to speak it right, Chinese actors on set helped me."
And the Bachna stars recently shot with host Salman Khan on Dus Ka Dum. "Don't remind me! I have to say my estimates were bang on! This was the first time I'd interacted with Salman on a personal level - he's very sweet, polite and kind." And all that talk about Ranbir siding with Salman after the SRK fracas - does it make it awkward for Deepika since Shah Rukh was her first hero? "I'm an actor," she says, with perfect poise, "I don't pick sides. Ranbir and I are not involved in the incident or connected."
Three things you like about men? "In general - well, simplicity, a good sense of humour and intelligence."
Three things you hate about men?"Well, at least one thing is when some guys try to act like they're macho. It's putting off."Three English movies I love"Serendipity, Roman Holiday and well... I love romances. Like When Harry Met Sally."
Three hottest men"Arjun Rampal is an all-time favourite and he knows that! Ranbir, of course. And Akshay Kumar."
Three things that freak me out"Fire, snakes and lies."
Three things I'd never leave home without
"My wallet, my phone and myself."
'I'm going to hold Deepika's hand!'
Bipasha Basu aka Radhika
Bipasha Basu is determined she won't let it get in the way. There are reports of cold vibes between her and her Bachna costar Deepika, while the cast was shooting for a reality show. "I won't allow awkwardness to creep in now. We spent 12 hours that day shooting and laughing together, no tantrums, nothing. Why make a big drama out of everything? Now I'm going to tell Ranbir to hold Minissha's hand for other events and I'll hold Deepika's!" she laughs.
Bips is red hot - this time she even has the strands to prove it, giving a red tinge to her fringed bob. In Bachna, she plays a dancer in Shiamak Davar's troupe and also Raj's (Ranbir) live-in girlfriend Radhika. "So tell me, where is all this Mrs Robinson track? I'm not even shown as wrinkled and old! And Mrs Robinson was so much older," she says indignantly. "The media would like me to feel 75 at 29, though I'm only four years older to Ranbir and two to Neil Nitin Mukesh (her Freeze costar). The film doesn't take that angle. Radhika is like me. A girl of today who's ambitious, but who balances her love life."
Bipasha giggles that in real life, dancing scares her. Shiamak himself said, 'Oh goody!' when he heard she was playing a dancer in his troupe, but that intimated the star. "I thought 'I have to become thinner.' His dancers don't have an iota of fat - it's insane!" Bipasha even had a tough time working the floors. For her big song Lucky Boy, she hurt her knee bad and found out just a day before. Nothing to do; she slipped on the high heels, grinned and bore it.
While she describes Bachna as an easy watch, Bipasha is already sitting pretty this year after Race, a huge hit in 2008's line of duds. "Well, I've had three years of failures too; you never know what audiences are going to accept. Neither Race nor Bachna are path-breaking. They're both a fun day out. I just believe in my gut instinct when I choose films."
Three things you like about men?"Intelligence, good looks and height (I'd have to be attracted to the person in the first place) and a sense of humour"
Three things you hate about men?"Some of them are vain and can't get over themselves. It's tiring when they're in love with themselves. When they blame women for everything. And when they smell bad because men can have pretty strong bad odour"
Three English movies I love"The Godfather, My Best Friend's Wedding and The Magnificent Seven"
Three hottest men"Matthew McConaughey, Brad Pitt and John Abraham. I better mention my boyfriend â he's looking so good in the Dostana trailor that at the Bachna Ae Haseeno trial, everyone started hooting when he came on!"
Three things that freak me out"Lizards, ghosts (I'm a big wuss. I can never sleep alone, even if I have to be with my enemy!) and body odour. I'm a gym person so body odour gives me the heebie jeebies. I may be half-blind, but I have a strong nose!
Three things I'd never leave home without"Money - very important, my cell phone and my house keys"'
I attained nirvana with the cold!
'Minissha Lamba aka Mahi
LUCKILY, Minissha Lamba isn't as uni-dimensional as her character Mahi, "bred on stories of romance". On our trivia capsule, she lets out a leaning for emotional dramas like Last King Of Scotland. Now Mahi... Mahi would have gone for pure sap. "She's this girl from Amritsar who believes in love, who is eternally hopeful," describes Minissha, curled up in her vanity van, surfing the net on her laptop. "A fairytale ending is all the ambition she has." Minissha sees some similarities though. "My career is very important, but love completes me. You live once," she shrugs.
So in Bachna's teasers, Minissha and Ranbir's track is described as his first love. The two shot all over Switzerland for their track, sometimes plummeting down roller coasters and snow slopes in the freezing cold. So did Minissha wear layers under that flimsy top and colourful baggy pants? "Erk, no! A Hindi heroine can't look fat! I had no jacket and I thought I would get frostbite in those sandals but I adapted. I told my mind I wasn't cold. Director Siddharth Anand brushed past me and my arm was like ice. But I was elevated - I had attained nirvana."
Much like her sunny character, Minissha too isn't carping. The actress, next seen in Sanjay Gadhvi's Kidnap with new Bollywood heartthrob Imran Khan, says she had a blast working with Ranbir. "We went on for 16-18 hours because it was such a great crew. You'll fall in love with Ranbir. He's super-talented, spontaneous and endearing." So any superlatives left for how real-life couple Ranbir and Deepika look together? "Gorgeous!" beams Minissha.
Three things you like about men?"Well, that they're men, for starters! That they're strong and that you can maintain easy relationships with them. You don't have to work so hard at it; you can pick up just where you left off."
Three things you hate about men?"When they generalize about women and it isn't true at all. Men who show off. And when they don't ask for directions and get bugged when you stop and ask for them! It's so illogical."
Three English movies I love"Spy Game, The American President and The Last King of Scotland"
Three hottest men"Robert Redford - he's the ultimate man. They don't make 'em like that anymore! Brad Pitt and Hrithik Roshan."
Three things that freak me out"I don't scare easily - rats, cockroaches, spiders, lizards, fire, water, heights, ghosts⦠nothing much really. Things that freak me out - well, irrational people, snakes and when I'm going round and round trying to find an address. That can really put me in a foul mood."
Three things I'd never leave home without"My phone, my house keys and my lip balm. I'm a lip balm freak."
