Delhi Development Authority's (DDA) newly-launched scheme of low-cost flats, where allotment will be made on a first-come first-serve basis, resulted in a brawl at a crowded application center in Azadpur Mandi.
The fight between applicants, who had lined up to get the forms, turned into a stampede after the police used power to control the crowd.
Atleast ten persons were injured and several sustained serious injuries in the stampede and had to be admitted in the hospital.
Officials said the applicants had queued up since 6 am. The counter at Azadpur Mandi's Krishi Bhawan opened at 10 am. Around 11.30 am, there was a stampede among applicants after the brawl.
The Northwest District police had to even resort to lathicharge for few minutes.
Senior police and DDA officials refused to comment on the situation.
The sale of application forms for the allotment of low-cost houses under the Rajiv Ratan Awas Yojana started August 5.
The scheme aims to make Delhi a slum-free Capital city.
