Rare Ferrari 250 TR expected to break records at RM's Maranello auction
With its stunning pontoon-fendered bodywork sculpted by Scaglietti, the Ferrari 250 TR is not only one of the most beautiful cars ever built, it was one of the most competitive as well. Ferrari captured ten victories in nineteen races from 1958 to 1961, including a class win at Le Mans with Phil Hill and Olivier Gendebien.

It's rare to see one offered for sale, and it is a guarantee that a massive sum of money will exchange hands when one comes on the market. Those high-end car collectors who remain unaffected by economic woes will have the chance to part with such funds this coming May when a 1957 Ferrari 250 TR, chassis #0714TR, crosses the block at RM Auctions' Ferrari Leggenda E Passione sale in Maranello. This particular example was campaigned extensively from 1958 to 1963 and is painted in its period-correct black paint with a red nose. RM expects the 250 TR to set a new world record for a car sold at auction, potentially exceeding the $21.7 million it took to buy a 250 GTO last year. More details on the sale in the press release from RM after the break.

2010 Ford Ranger: Pickup Adds New, Standard Safety Technologies to Unsurpassed Fuel...
DEARBORN, Mich., -- The 2010 Ford Ranger will add as standard equipment this summer a segment-exclusive safety technology -- AdvanceTrac(R) with RSC(R) (Roll Stability Control) -- that helps prevent skidding and dangerous rollover conditions

-- The new 2010 Ranger also adds new combination side air bags - offered standard - designed for head and torso protection

-- With 2.3-liter I-4 engine, the Ranger offers unsurpassed pickup fuel economy with an EPA-estimated 26 mpg on the highway

-- Ford has more U.S. government 5-star safety-rated vehicles than any other brand and more IIHS "Top Safety Picks" than any other automaker

The 2010 Ford Ranger comes to market this summer by adding unique standard safety technologies, including Ford's AdvanceTrac(R) with RSC(R) -- the world's most sophisticated electronic stability control system that helps prevent skidding and rollovers -- and combination side air bags.

Industry-exclusive AdvanceTrac with RSC goes a step beyond stability control systems found on competitive models with a gyroscopic roll sensor that determines both the vehicle's body roll angle and roll rate.

If it detects the vehicle is about to roll, the system automatically applies additional countermeasures -- such as reducing engine power 15 percent and/or applying brakes to one or more wheels -- to enhance vehicle rollover resistance.

The new Ranger's head-and-chest combination side air bags provide enhanced head and torso protection in certain side impacts. The side air bag system is designed to cushion the head, minimizing lateral head injuries in case of collision, in addition to acting as a barrier between the occupant and the side of the vehicle.

"The 2010 Ranger's Roll Stability Control and combination side air bag technologies will help occupants stay out of harm's way," said Steve Kozak, chief engineer of safety systems, Ford Motor Company. "The Ranger has been America's most fuel-efficient pickup, and now it features a combination of safety features not offered in any other small pickup."

In addition, Ranger also provides high levels of safety and security with Ford's Personal Safety System(R), Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) and SecuriLock(R) passive anti-theft system, all included as standard equipment on all models.

Also standard are four-wheel anti-lock brakes, driver- and front-passenger air bags, safety belts with front pretensioners for outboard seating positions and side-intrusion door beams. Ford's front-passenger sensing system helps ensure air bags are not deployed on the passenger side when small children are detected. Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children (LATCH) child-seat mounts are provided in the front-passenger seat on all models.

Further adding value to the Ranger is its class-leading fuel economy and low cost of ownership. With EPA-estimated fuel economy at 21 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway for the 2.3-liter I-4 engine, Ranger offers unsurpassed fuel economy for pickups. Plus its 7,500-mile service intervals for routine maintenance, such as oil changes, help Ranger historically rank among the lowest cost of ownership among all compact pickups studied by Edmunds.com.

Citroen's Mini & Fiat 500 rival
Citroen will be taking on the Mini and Fiat 500 with a new DS supermini next year.

However, instead of the DS being a standalone model, it'll be a collection of stylish, upmarket cars set to compete with smaller BMWs, Audis and Mercedes. And the only thing retro about the DSs will be the name.

It all kicks off with the DS3: it's about the same size as a Mini Clubman, yet its compact, muscular look makes the British car look distinctly dated.

A three-door concept car called DS Inside will be shown for the first time at the Geneva motor show next month.

It's a little under four meters long and has design features such as a floating roof (highlighted by a contrasting colour) and a distinctive shark fin panel just behind the rear door.

Expect the car that reaches showrooms in the first half of 2010 to remain faithful to the concept car.

A new Citroen badge features fresh chevrons, while a new DS badge sits in the middle of the tailgate, above a centrally mounted exhaust.

More traditional Citroen-style headlights are complemented by LED lights in the deep front spoiler.

The rear lights are similarly distinctive, as are the chrome slashes on the bottom of the doors.

Inside, the designers have been given free reign to come up with some delightful detailing, from the chrome gearknob and handbrake trim, to the conical instruments and low-slung seats, which give a clue to the car's sporty intentions.

The production DS should offer a range of petrol and diesel models, with power outputs from 90 to a Mini Cooper S-rivalling 155bhp. Citroen is aiming for a model with CO2 emissions of less than 100g/km, while there's also talk of a microhybrid model, too.

The DS is expected to offer similar boot space to the Mini Clubman at around 265litres.

Plus just like the Mini and Fiat 500, there'll be myriad ways to personalise your DS3 so no two cars will be alike.

You should be able to choose from 43 exterior colours, 10 seat upholsteries, 25 wheel designs, 15 door mirror shells and eight stick-on graphic themes, which will include eco, art, fashion, heroes and sport.

Although DS models will be more expensive than similarly sized Citroens, we're promised that they'll be cheaper than rivals from premium brands such as BMW and Audi. So we'd expect the DS3 to start at under £12,000 when it arrives next year.

Citroen's new model blitz
As Citroen reaches its 90th birthday, the marque has unveiled its new corporate identity and revealed it will be launching an all-new model every six months between now and 2012.

The new model blitz will include the return of the famous DS name – last used by Citroen in 1975.

DS models will be more upmarket than their standard Citroen counterparts and promise to compete in quality and dynamic terms with cars from more prestigious marques. DSs will be more expensive than other Citroens, but cheaper than premium brand rivals.

Citroen also promises that DS models will be unique, with plush interiors offering a hand-crafted feel. Driver enjoyment will be high on the agenda, but not to the detriment of practicality.

However, DSs will be sold onlythrough selected Citroen dealers, expected to account for around 70% of the network

First of the range of DSs to arrive will be the DS3 – a Mini Clubman-sized supermini that should be on sale in the first half of 2010.

However, the first new Citroen to arrive will be the C3 Picasso, which hits UK showrooms in April.

A more conventional replacement for the C3 supermini should be previewed at next September's Frankfurt motor show before going on sale towards the end of this year.

Then comes the launch of the DS brand with the DS3 and two other, equally individual, DS models expected to follow suit, called the DS4 and DS5.

Finally, in 2012, a new C4 will arrive, said to be as much of a step forward as the new C5 was over its predecessor.

Citroen's new corporate identity includes the first update of the Citroen badge for 25 years.

The new, more rounded, Chevrons will herald a whole new look for Citroen's dealers and marketing. The badge on the nose of all new Citroens will change, while dealers will get a very new look to bring them into line with the youngest model range in Citroen's 90-year history.

Automobile Club of Southern California Reducing Auto Rates 5.4%
The Automobile Club of Southern California announced it would be implementing a $101 million rate reduction for insurance policyholders in California, an average decrease of 5.4 percent.

As the fifth largest auto insurer in the state, the Auto Club insures more than 2 million California vehicles, according to the California Department of Insurance. Under the newly approved reduced rates, Auto Club auto policyholders save an average of about 5.4 percent, or about $100 per policy per year -- a total of $101 million. Rate reductions will go into effect for new or renewed policies after April 1, 2009.

"I encourage all insurance companies to follow the example set by AAA in putting consumers first," said California Insurance Commissioner Poizner. "AAA of Southern California has consistently stepped up to the plate, working to maintain affordable rates for consumers. This rate reduction further demonstrates the company's professionalism and commitment to serving its policyholders."

Thomas V. McKernan, CEO of the Auto Club, said this was his company's second major auto rate reduction in three years. "With this rate reduction we will have saved policyholders $234 million since 2006," he said.

Used car sales start to rise
Used car sales are rising as buyers take advantage of low prices, according to new research and auction results.

Sharp rises in vehicle depreciation and slow sales have pushed down used car prices in recent months, according to research by industry analysts EurotaxGlass, but the bargain prices are now tempting buyers.

'The good news for consumers is that the falls in trade values are being translated into lower asking prices on the forecourt, and there have been clear signs over recent weeks that retail demand has improved as a result,' said Adrian Rushmore, EurotaxGlass's managing editor.

Research showed that compact MPVs such as the Citroen Picasso and Renault Scenic, have fared worst from the rapid rise in rates of depreciation.

Trade values of three-year-old, petrol-powered models are down by 31%, compared to identical cars of the same age at the start of 2007.

Car supermarkets across the country have been reporting strong sales in recent weeks, with keen-eyed customers snapping up well-priced cars quickly. The country's leading auction houses have also notice an upturn in sales since Christmas and there appears to be a scramble for good condition vehicles offering the best value.

British Car Action latest report shows that average used car values rose by £300 in January compared with December. At the same time the average age and mileage of used cars fell slightly to four years, three months and 52,500 miles.

What Car?'s used car editor, Matt Sanger, is not surprised with the news: 'It's taken most buyers a while to wake up to the fact that there are some stunning used bargains out there – especially the types of cars that have suffered big value drops in the last few months. Large SUVs, performance cars, large MPV and even family cars are all looking like a great buy. If you've got the money there are savings to be made.

Maserati reveals plans for new model
Maserati will follow up a record sales year in 2008 by fleshing out its model ranges and adding a third, all-new car within the next 12 months.

The first launch will be the Quattroporte GTS, which will go on sale in March. It is a slightly more powerful, but more sportily tuned and trimmed version of the four-door saloon. Prices will start from £89,500.

Later in the year, the same engine and gearbox package will be used in the Gran Turismo Coupe, adding a third model to that range.

Unlike the Gran Turismo S, which is the only Maserati using an automated manual gearbox, the forthcoming GTS will have a fully automatic unit.

At the start of 2010 a new Spyder will be introduced, which will based on the Gran Turismo. Unlike the previous Spyder, which was strictly a two-seater, Maserati says the new model will accommodate four.

The new Spyder might be shown for the first time at this year's Frankfurt motor show.

Toyota triples its loss forecast
Toyota has predicted its losses for 2008 will be three times greater than expected.

The world's biggest car maker had warned in December that it would make an operating loss of 150 billion yen (£1.3 billion).

That figure has now been tripled to 450 billion yen after a sharp fall in demand for its cars. The annual loss for 2008 will be the first incurred by Toyota in 70 years.

Falling demand combined with the strengthening yen has hit the company's exports. The company has also revealed that it made a loss of 164 billion yen from October to December.

Toyota has reacted to the fall in demand by cutting shifts at 17 of its 75 production lines around the world.

Full Boat: Dormant ships being used as lots for unsold vehicles
Looking for a place to stash tens of thousands of unsold new vehicles, automakers are turning unused car carrier ships into floating parking holds. It's an unusual development, especially in a shipping industry that is used to having boats filled to capacity and running full steam across the seas. As shippers face sharp declines in traffic, the world's fleet of 640 floating car carriers have been forced to make serious adjustments to cut costs and determine ways to absorb extra capacity. With distribution ports filled with excess inventory and dealers unwilling to accept additional stock, automakers are running out of places to stash cars and parking space is at a premium. All of which has helped to make unused cargo holds look mighty attractive.

Toyota has reportedly signed a deal with Wallenius Wilhelmsen, a large Scandinavian joint venture car-carrier fleet operator, to store up to 2,500 new vehicles in a port in southern Sweden. According to Oslo-based Höegh Autoliners, several other auto manufacturers are negotiating similar deals right now.

Tucker Convertible "Prototype" hits eBay
So much for waiting until after it's first shown at the Pebble Beach and Amelia Island concours events. Benchmark Classics, the collector car firm that managed to procure the only known Tucker convertible in existence, has already placed the machine on eBay, despite the fact that the car's restoration has yet to be completed. It's not really known how this particular vehicle came into existence, with some claiming that it might have been a behind-the-scenes factory effort and others resolutely saying that it's nothing more than an interesting custom.

Regardless of its murky past, the future is looking bright for the droptop Tucker, which is scheduled to be completed in May. Judging from the pictures that have been made available, the car managed to survive in relatively decent shape considering its age, and the restoration work appears to be top notch to our untrained eyes. One thing is for certain: This car is not going to go cheap. The bidding starts at million dollars, but those wishing to cut right to the chase can opt to Buy It Now for $5,000,000.

Honda Insight hits Japan, Mugen accessories follow
It might seem like an odd pairing at first, but we're sure Honda's Mugen accessorized Insight hybrid will find a few buyers in its home market of Japan. Included in the exterior body kit are a sports grille and lip spoiler up front, a set of ground effects for each side, a reworked from fascia and huge wing out back along with optional window visors. Inside, a full set of sports mats is available along with a drilled aluminum set of pedals.

There isn't much to speak of underhood besides a high performance oil filter (seriously?) and lubricants, but there is a sport silencer kit complete with a triangular tip. The best bits, though, are definitely in the handling department, with two sets of alloy wheels in either 15- or 16-inch sizes joining a sports suspension package that includes a new set of springs and dampers that reduce ride height by 20 millimeters. So far, there's been no indication that any of these accessories will make it Stateside, but there's always eBay.

'Cash for Clunkers' Amendment Withdrawn From Senate Stimulus Bill
BETHESDA, Md.-- The "Cash for Clunkers" amendment to the United States Senate stimulus package was withdrawn from the bill on Thursday. The "Cash for Clunkers" program would have earmarked federal funds for car owners to trade in their sport utility vehicles in exchange for vouchers to be used to obtain newer, more fuel efficient vehicles.

"We are thrilled that this amendment was withdrawn from the stimulus package," said Kathleen Schmatz, president and CEO of the Automotive Aftermarket Industry Association (AAIA). "This amendment was full of potholes from the beginning and once the Senators were informed of all the unintended harmful consequences that would have resulted from inclusion of this amendment in the bill, they made a very wise and informed decision to remove this amendment from the stimulus package."

Congress and states have considered "Cash for Clunkers" proposals in the past and in many cases have decided against them. Many legislators have come to realize the unintended consequences of this program and that they are not a cost effective use of government money.

"I want to thank our AAIA staff and most importantly our membership for their hard work in getting out the word about the problems 'Cash for Clunkers' would cause," continued Schmatz. "Their letters, emails and phone calls opposing 'Cash for Clunkers' were instrumental in getting this amendment removed. The elimination of this amendment is a great victory for vehicle owners as well as for every small business owner who is involved in the automotive industry."

Government car aid cash not ready
The Government's £2.3 billion aid package for the UK car industry has come under attack, after it was revealed that ministers have yet to apply to Brussels to fund it.

Following reports in the Financial Times that the application for European Central Bank funding had not been made, Mark Prisk, the Shadow Minister for Business and Enterprise, argued that the aid package 'won’t sell a single car.'

Car makers have also warned that more aid is urgently needed.

David Smith, chief executive of Jaguar Land Rover, outlined why the Government should support the car industry, which he described as one of the UK's manufacturing success stories.

'It would now be a tragedy were the aid package not to be delivered in time to avert the industrial consequences of another quarter like this one,' said Smith.

Jaguar Land Rover CEO calls for urgent action on car support package
Jaguar Land Rover's Chief Executive Officer, David Smith, has urged immediate action by the Government to deliver the aid package promised to the UK's automotive industry if serious industrial consequences are to be averted.

Addressing an audience that included the Business Secretary, Lord Mandelson, at the CBI's Manufacturing Dinner in Birmingham, Mr Smith welcomed the Government's reaction to calls from the automotive sector for support while stressing the need to stimulate the market and the urgency of the situation facing manufacturers, suppliers and dealers.

"It would now be a tragedy were the aid package not to be delivered in time to avert the industrial consequences of another quarter like this one," Mr Smith told the audience.

Mr Smith said tens of billions of support had been provided by the Germans, the French, the Swedes and the Americans for their automotive industries. He said action was needed right now in the UK, not just for the short-term task of protecting jobs and skills, but also to ensure the country had the right foundations for economic success in the future.

Mr Smith repeated this was not a bail out, pointing out in the eighteen months preceding the credit crunch Jaguar Land Rover had made over £600m in profit.

The economic crisis, he said, had been brought about by a "massive collective failure of leadership of those who run our financial systems" and it was essential to ensure this did not happen again without falling into the trap of over-regulation which would stifle any recovery.

He emphasised the importance of manufacturing to the UK's economy which had been overshadowed by the financial and service sectors. In the case of Jaguar Land Rover, it supported 75,000 jobs; spent £2.5 billion with suppliers; and its exports earned over £4 billion a year for UK plc.

"Manufacturing matters. It has been the bedrock of Britain’s economy. It has been our ability to make, allied with our ability to sell, on which the wealth of this country rests. Over the last quarter of a century, this reliance on manufacturing and trade has been overshadowed. Too much of our economy has been dominated by the service and financial sectors. In the last few months, we've seen the folly of the over-emphasis on finance."

He added, "The reckless indifference of past industrial policy has left a technology and skills gap that we need to continue closing quickly."

Mr Smith said the UK motor industry is investing in new technologies such as electric hybrids and lightweight materials and he said Britain had the opportunity to lead the green, low carbon industrial revolution just as it had led the steam powered high carbon industrial revolution of the late C18th.

Jaguar Land Rover is investing £800m to develop sustainable technologies and will reduce vehicle CO2 emissions by 25% over the next few years, well ahead of the industry mandated average. The company spends £400m a year on research and development, accounting for around a third of the UK's total annual investment in automotive R&D. Thanks to the use of clean, modern, efficient diesel engines coupled with intelligent management systems, Jaguar and Land Rover are capable of producing premium vehicles capable of over 40 mpg. Jaguar has pioneered the use of aluminium with the result the XJ and XK are the lightest in their class, with the XJ being voted the greenest luxury vehicle for two years running.

Mr Smith said Jaguar Land Rover was working with universities, the Technology Strategy Board and Advantage West Midlands to develop these new technologies.

Examples of new high-tech low-carbon thinking include the intelligent stop-start system fitted to this year's diesel Freelander model that eliminates tailpipe pollution when the vehicle stops, such as in traffic or while waiting at the lights.

Other innovations, showcased by the LRX concept car, include a pioneering diesel-electric hybrid engine that not only gives pollution free low-speed city driving but also improves off-road performance by supplementing the normal diesel power with electric power.

These projects, and others, are partly funded by the government through its Low Carbon Vehicles Innovation Platform, which Mr Smith described as a great example of intelligent government support for the industry.

"But we don't just need partnerships between public and private sectors, academia, trade unions and local Government. We need more co-operation and joined-up thinking between our different industries. Under the umbrella of a new low-carbon industrial policy, British industries – automotive, aerospace, digital manufacturing, electronics, pharmaceutical, defence, chemical, the oil industry, and more – could and should work together more effectively. Our automotive industry, for example, can provide huge long-term improvements and so can the aerospace business with carbon reductions of up to 20 percent within five years. By working better together we can all help UK plc become a low-carbon leader not a follower."

New car market remains subdued in January
"There is a clear need to stimulate demand for new vehicles in the UK market. A number of EU member states have launched scrappage incentive schemes, which have the benefit of boosting consumer confidence and delivering significant environmental improvements," said Paul Everitt, SMMT chief executive. "The UK motor industry is urging UK government to introduce a similar scheme and help sustain jobs and businesses throughout the sector."

Source : http://www.autoindustry.co.uk (2/6/2009)

Depressed start for registrations in 2009
"January’s figures show the close link between the economic outlook and new van and truck registrations," said Paul Everitt, SMMT chief executive. "They show how tough the first half of the year will get as spending slows. Vans are down nearly 50% for the month and 18% for the rolling year and now trucks are falling fast after holding up until the final quarter of 2008. With stock to clear and judgements needed on when and where the fall in demand will stop, the UK commercial vehicle business is in for a very tough year even if government policy aid and lending guarantees arrive. This year will test the resilience of the sector in the UK and across the EC; it will come through but the challenge is huge."

Mandelson hints at scrappage scheme
Business Secretary Lord Mandelson has given his biggest hint yet that he will introduce a scrappage scheme in order to stimulate the ailing UK car market.

Scrappage schemes have already been introduced successfully in Germany and France, where owners who trade-in cars of around nine-years-old receive a cash incentive of almost £2000 if they subsequently buy a new environmentally friendly car.

The car industry is lobbying hard for such a scheme to be introduced in the UK, and the Government has already asked car makers to supply costed proposals.

However, the Treasury has reservations about the incentive, fearing it could subsidise manufacturers based in Europe and not the UK.

Paul Everitt, the chief executive of the SMMT, said scrappage incentive schemes would help stimulate consumer demand.

'The production facilities in the UK and Europe will not begin to function properly until the market is moving satisfactorily,' he said.

'There is a significant amount of inventory out there. If we can use a scrappage mechanism to shift that inventory and begin to create a steady flow of demand, then production facilities can start to operate.'

Leaked: Citroën DS
PARIS — It's been nearly a quarter-century since the last of the iconic Citroën DS cars rolled off the line here, but the car with the initials pronounced Déesse, which translates as "goddess," is not forgotten. In fact, the French automaker plans to revive the nomenclature on a brand-new family of stylish cars that appear to share little more than their familiar initials with the original.

The first of the new DS range, dubbed the DS3, will break cover officially at the 2009 Geneva Auto Show next month, and images already have leaked on the Web. The boxy compact looks like it could be a potential Mini Cooper competitor in Europe. It borrows heavily from Citroën's C-Cactus concept from the 2007 Frankfurt Auto Show. The Geneva concept is named the DS Inside.

Citroën says the new family eventually will include DS4 and DS5 variants, positioned above the DS3 in size and price. The first production models will go on sale next year in Europe.

Honda Australia Launches All New City
TULLAMARINE, Australia – : Honda is introducing the all-new third-generation City to Australia. This latest model introduces new levels of styling, performance, driving dynamics and ride quality combined with outstanding packaging, functionality and versatility.

The City has been a sales success for Honda with over one million units sold in 39 countries since its debut in 1996.

Two models are offered; the VTi and the VTi-L.

The VTi is comprehensively equipped with power windows and mirrors, central locking and an iPod ready single in-dash CD stereo with MP3 compatibility. It has a raft of safety equipment as standard - ABS brakes with Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist, dual front, side and curtain airbags and front seatbelt pre-tensioners.

Both models are powered by a 1.5-litre SOHC i-VTEC engine that has an output of 88kW and 145Nm (identical to the Jazz VTi and VTi-S). Fuel economy is similarly frugal, achieving a combined 6.3L/100km and just 148g/km in manual form.

The VTi-L gains tilt and telescopic steering, 16 inch alloy wheels, chrome door handles, fog lights, premium grade trim and a leather steering wheel. Both variants are available with either a 5-speed manual or Honda’s new 5-speed automatic transmission.

Like the Jazz, the City has employed the same suspension layout, (MacPherson strut front and torsion beam rear) for maximum packaging efficiency, providing high overall ride quality, sure-footed handling, agility and ultimately an enjoyable driving experience. The turning radius is 5 metres at wheel centre and Electric Power Steering (EPS) is standard across the range.

A key feature of the City is its overall interior spaciousness. It can easily accommodate five adults in comfort and has a bigger boot (506 litres VDA) than the Accord (450 litres), Accord Euro (467 litres) and even a Holden Commodore.

Honda Australia’s Managing Director and CEO, Mr. Yasuhide Mizuno, said the arrival of the City has been welcomed by Honda, its dealers and customers alike.

“From my previous experience in the Asia-Oceania region, I am very confident the new City will have universal appeal for buyers of all ages. It has the edgy styling that young people seek with plenty of room for those who frequently travel with friends. Added to that is the class-leading power, exceptional fuel economy, top-shelf quality and tremendous value-for-money that only Honda can provide. It sets a new benchmark for light sedans.”

French newspaper Les Echos has reported that parent company PSA Peugeot-Citroen is set to make an announcement to that effect.

PSA is expected to say that the DS could return, perhaps as a series of models, all sharing the luxury DS moniker.

Retro models have become big business, with the MINI, Volkswagen's Beetle and the new Fiat 500 all proving to be a hit with customers.

Originally designed by Flaminio Bertoni (not to be confused with Bertone), The DS is one of several highly revered Citroens.

Nearly 1.5 million examples of the luxury executive DS rolled out between 1955 and 1975.

Commissioner Poizner Cuts Deal Allowing Auto Club to Keep $140 Million of...
SANTA MONICA, Calif. -- California Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner's decision to limit the size of Auto Club of Southern California's insurance rate cut will cost AAA policyholders an average of $240 each this year. The Commissioner announced a 5.4% rate cut for the state's 2nd largest auto insurer today without the agreement of Consumer Watchdog, which requested a hearing on Auto Club's rate application. The group said that, by its review of the company's data, the Commissioner should have required a much more substantial rate cut (at least 13%) and that the Department of Insurance had not properly involved consumer intervenors in the process and may have not followed its own regulations.

A key to the Department's justification of the smaller-than-appropriate rate cut is the rule changes to Proposition 103 rate regulations that Commissioner Poizner enacted on an emergency basis last spring. Under stronger rules established by former Commissioner John Garamendi, insurance companies were required to look back at three years of data to determine important rate-setting trends related to the cost of claims. Under the deregulatory changes made by Commissioner Poizner, companies can choose how far back they look to set the trends. Auto Club was allowed to use only a year and a half of data, which overstated so-called "loss trends." That change alone allowed Auto Club to charge consumers approximately $60 million more than would have been allowed if Commissioner Poizner had not deregulated elements of the state's insurance reform laws.

A combination of other exceptions to the rules (known as variances) and the fact that the Department never held a promised meeting with all parties, including Consumer Watchdog, to work out the competing analyses, led the overall rate change to be $140 million too rich for Auto Club.

"When insurance companies are allowed to pick and choose, consumers lose," said Consumer Watchdog's Executive Director Douglas Heller. "After everything we've seen in the nation's financial markets, it should be no surprise that a deregulatory, hands off approach will leave the public worse off than it ought to be. Auto Club really should be cutting policyholder premiums by about $240 each, but instead Californians are getting less than half of what they deserve and Auto Club pockets the rest."

New Bravo Diesel 2.0 Multijet: More Power, Less Fuel, Lower Emissions
SLOUGH, United Kingdom –: A stylish new fleet challenger from Fiat will allow company car drivers to enjoy increased power and performance, while maintaining impressive fuel economy and low tax bills.

Fiat’s stylish mid-size Bravo hatchback is now available with a new 165bhp 2.0-litre 16v MultiJet engine, which will replace the current 1.9 MultiJet. The new engine is ‘greener’ than its predecessor, thanks to Euro V compliance and a diesel particulate filter that reduces CO2 emissions to just 139g/km – resulting in low 18 per cent Benefit in Kind tax bills for company car drivers.

And yet, despite these impressive environmental credentials, it also delivers class leading performance – 0-62mph in 8.2 seconds and a top speed of 134 mph – while returning 53.2mpg fuel economy in the combined cycle.

“Fiat’s current range of vehicles is perfectly in tune with the times, thanks to cutting edge technology that helps to reduce fuel use and emissions,” says Adam Pumfrey, Fleet and Remarketing Director, Fiat Group Automobiles UK. “And the new 2.0-litre engine for Bravo continues this trend, while actually increasing driver enjoyment.

“Considered from a Whole Life Cost perspective, the Bravo’s low purchase price, competitive resale values and good fuel economy make it a cost-effective option for fleet managers looking to reduce operating costs over a typical three-year contract.”

Bravo 2.0 MultiJet 16v is available in two trim levels – Dynamic and Sport – from £16,855 OTR.

The newcomer is complemented in the range by the diesel powered Bravo 1.6-litre MultiJet Active ECO model, priced from £14,450, which has tax-busting CO2 emissions of 119g/km plus 62.7mpg on the combined cycle.

Bravo models are available with Blue&Me, the hands-free communication, information and entertainment system which powers Fiat’s eco:Drive technology.

eco:Drive downloads information about the way the car is being driven – including speed, gear changes, acceleration and deceleration – to a datastick plugged into a USB port inside the car. Drivers can then transfer this data to their computer via a free tool available from Fiat’s website, and see for themselves exactly how their driving style is affecting performance and emissions.

Audi's Market Shares Continue To Grow In January
INGOLSTADT, Germany –: Audi sold around 56,200 cars in January. As expected, sales fell short of the record figures for the same month last year due to the worldwide economic crisis (down 28.6 percent; 2008: 78,679). In comparison to its competitors, however, the Audi brand could strengthen its position. In the midst of sharply declining markets, Audi further expanded its market share in Germany as well as Western Europe and the USA in the midst of a sharply declining market.

“This year won’t be easy for anyone. At Audi, our strategy remains expansive: In the first six months alone we’ll bring six new models onto the market,” said Peter Schwarzenbauer, Member of the Board of Management for Marketing and Sales at AUDI AG. “Our young product range has been well-received in comparison with our competitors – this is proven by our growing market shares.” Some 100,000 readers of the German trade magazine auto, motor und sport judged the Audi A4, Audi A6 allroad quattro and the new Audi Q5 to be among the best cars of 2009.

The decline in sales in the last month reflects both lackluster consumer confidence and Audi’s extraordinary sales levels of the previous year. In January 2008 the new generation of the highest-volume Audi model – the A4 Sedan – was available throughout Europe for the first time. In January 2009, sales in Europe were 31.2 percent below last year’s levels across all model lines, with around 37,700 vehicles sold (2008: 54,843).

The decline in the USA to 4,722 amounted to a 26.4 percent drop (2008: 6,418). In the Asia-Pacific region, the brand with the four rings sold around 10,400 cars, 22 percent less than last year (2008: 13,314).

Audi has nonetheless succeeded in further strengthening its position within the problematic market environment. The brand’s market share in Germany rose to 7.8 percent (January 2008: 6.7 percent). In the USA, Audi’s share of the premium car market rose by 0.5 percentage points to 7.2 percent of the market. In Western Europe, the Ingolstadt-based carmaker’s market share rose to around 5 percent, according to current projections (last year: 3.9 percent).

The brand also grew in absolute numbers within some markets. Audi in Australia, for example, reported a further increase of 5.5 percent, with 1,081 units sold (2008: 1,025). And in India (109 units, up 94.6 percent) as well as in the Middle East (510 units, up 0.2 percent), more customers purchased cars from the Ingolstadt-based premium car brand than during the same month last year.

Jiangsu '08 Auto Parts Export Value Rises 16%
Shanghai, Jiangsu province of east China exported $680 million worth of auto parts in 2008, up 15.8% from a year earlier, according to data released today by China Customs. But the growth was 19.4% slower than last year's. The monthly export value had been severely affected by the global financial crisis in the last two months of last year. Before October 2008 the province's monthly export value stayed at $58 million, but that figure fell to $51 million in November and $46 million in December, down 5.5% and 21.9% respectively.

Of the total export value, $460 million came from the processing trade, increasing 1.8% year on year and accounting for 67.7% of the total value; $220 million came from the general trade, surging 61.3% year on year.

It also worth noting that the major part of the products were exported to Japan and the U.S., with $270 million (+9.4%), $150 (-15.6%) worth of products exported for each of the two destination markets. The two countries account for 61.8% of the total value of the total auto parts exports in 2008.

As to the company type, wholly foreign-owned enterprises exported $540 million worth of auto parts in 2008, up 3.8% year on year and accounting for 79.4% of the total.

Land Rover Vehicles Help Owners Overcome The Freeze
GAYDON, United Kingdom –: Land Rover has reissued its advice to motorists on how to cope with the winter driving conditions following heavy snowfall in most parts of the UK and warnings of more to come. Even so, Land Rover owners can count on the all-round capabilities of their vehicles to help them reach their destinations.

Land Rover has 60 years of driving experience, with a line-up of supremely capable vehicles which boast permanent four-wheel drive and pioneering technology such as Electronic Traction Control, Hill Descent Control (HDC) and Terrain Response – which includes a snow setting utilising the vehicles' traction aids. These all help ensure that Land Rover owners have total peace of mind when travelling in wet or icy conditions.

In addition, Land Rover customers can now take advantage of a free winter health check at their nearest Land Rover dealership until the end of February.

John Edwards, Land Rover UK managing director commented: "Poor driving conditions should be taken very seriously; so we are offering free winter health checks for all Land Rover customers. The dealership staff will ensure that wheels and tyres, lights, electrics, fluids and brakes are checked and screen wash topped up to the correct level. A welcome reassurance when conditions become treacherous."

However, not all drivers have the benefit of driving a Land Rover, so here are some general winter driving tips which may help should it be essential to drive in wintry conditions:

Use the highest practical gear, unless descending a hill – this limits the amount of torque and will help to prevent wheel spin Using first gear provides the maximum control when descending hills Clear ice and snow from all windows and lights – even the bonnet and roof – before driving Use all controls (steering, brakes, throttle etc) gently to help prevent loss of traction and control Leave extra distance between your vehicle and the vehicle in front of you – it takes longer to stop in adverse conditions Ensure you have enough fuel to complete your journey If planning a long journey or venturing off-road, ensure you have plenty of warm clothing, food and water in case of emergency

Premium of £1,420 over manual transmission A4 2.0 TFSI quattro S tronic £27,170 OTR, A4 Avant 2.0 TFSI quattro S tronic £28,295 OTR, A5 2.0 TFSI quattro S tronic £31,065 OTR S tronic twin-clutch transmission delivers exceptionally rapid gear changes with no interruption to power flow, reducing acceleration time yet retaining fuel economy and CO2 at the level of manual equivalents A4 2.0 TFSI quattro S tronic 0-62mph in 6.5 seconds (manual 6.6), top speed 150mph (manual 153mph), combined mpg 38.2 (manual 38.2), CO2 172g/km (manual 172g/km) A5 2.0 TFSI quattro S tronic 0-62mph in 6.2 seconds (manual 6.5), top speed 150mph (manual 153mph), combined mpg 38.2 (manual 38.2), CO2 172g/km (manual 173g/km) A4 also now available with new Executive SE and Executive S line specification options

Shifting into a higher gear in Audi A4 and A5 models could take as little as 0.2 seconds from this month as the latest performance-oriented S tronic twin-clutch automatic transmission makes the transition to 2.0 TFSI quattro versions of the acclaimed compact Saloon, Avant and Coupe. The new S tronic option adds £1,420 to the prices of A4 2.0 TFSI quattro and A5 2.0 TFSI quattro models, taking them to £27,170 OTR and £31,065 respectively.

Despite its rapidity, the latest incarnation of the twin-clutch gearbox also acts responsibly, maintaining fuel economy and CO2 output at the same level, or below, manual equivalents.

Launched to critical acclaim in the first generation TT, the advanced transmission added a new string to its bow during 2008 when it was further upgraded to enable installation in Audi models with longitudinal, ‘North-South’ engine installations. The new addition made its debut in the Q5 SUV, and soon after in the latest supercharged S4 Saloon and Avant.

Linked to an all-new engine It now brings its lightning fast changes to the A4 2.0 TFSI quattro with its brand new turbo charged and directly injected FSI engine enhanced by Audi valvelift technology for improved engine ‘breathing’. In Saloon form, the A4 2.0 TFSI quattro S tronic can power to 62mph from rest in 6.5 seconds - a 0.1 second improvement over the manual version - reach a top speed of 150mph and return 38.2mpg according to the combined cycle test. In the A5 2.0 TFSI quattro S tronic, the sprint to 62mph can be completed 0.3 seconds more quickly than in the manual at 6.2 seconds, and a top speed of 150mph can be reached, while combined economy and CO2 output match the A4 at 38.2mpg and 172g/km.

These impressive economy figures are identical to manual A4 and A5 equivalents, and in terms of CO2 output the A5 S tronic actually shows a reduction versus the manual version’s 173g/km, highlighting the fact that in contrast to most automatic transmissions S tronic demands no compromise in return for added convenience.

Advanced electro-hydraulic controls and the alternate use of two clutches enable the S tronic gearbox to deliver lightning fast automatic or manual shifts via the gear lever or steering wheel-mounted paddle controls with no interruption of the engine’s power delivery across seven ratios.

The first of the two clutches serves the odd-numbered gears and reverse, and the second the even-numbered gears, so when the A4 or A5 are travelling in third gear, for instance, fourth is already pre-selected in anticipation. As soon as the shift command is given, the first clutch is disengaged and the second engaged in just a few hundredths of a second, virtually seamlessly.

The sporting credentials of both A4 and A5 2.0 TFSI quattro models can not only be enhanced by the new S tronic transmission, but also by the extra cost option of the Audi drive select adaptive dynamics system. With its influence over throttle response, transmission points, steering weighting and damper control Audi drive select delivers the sharpest possible response and the highest degree of poise in all situations.

New Executive SE and Executive S line models In A4 models it is also now possible to further enhance appeal through highly cost effective specification upgrades following the introduction of new Executive SE and Executive S line trim lines. In addition to the SE equipment list, which among its highlights features 17-inch 7-arm alloy wheels, three-zone climate control, an Audi Concert CD audio system and automatic headlight and wiper operation, Executive SE specification brings an upgrade to 17-inch 10-spoke alloy wheels, an Audi Symphony audio system with six CD autochanger, cruise control and mobile phone preparation. The Executive SE trim line carries a premium of £635 over the SE model, representing a saving of £480 compared with the cost of adding each item individually.

The more sporting S line option that is available at extra cost for all A4 Saloon and Avant models includes 18-inch alloy wheels, a unique S line front and rear bumper design, extended side skirts, xenon headlights flanked by distinctive LED daytime running lights and S line sports suspension lowered by 20mm. Inside, it adds leather and cloth combination sports seats, a 3-spoke S line sports steering wheel, matt brushed aluminium inlays and a perforated leather gear knob.

S line models can also be given the Executive treatment – the Executive S line models that are new for 2009 upgrade to Alcantara and leather combination sports seats, the Symphony audio system with CD changer, cruise control and mobile phone preparation. At £63

Driving On Worn Tyres Is False Economy
LUTON, United Kingdom –: With much of Britain still blanketed by snow, drivers deferring their next car service to beat the economic crunch are taking a big risk with such safety critical components as tyres and brakes.

On icy roads, in temperatures hovering around zero, all the key components of your car need to be in peak condition, especially where safety is concerned.

A recent YouGov survey found that 13 per cent of drivers had put off making repairs to their cars in the last year due to cost.

If you drive a Vauxhall, SAAB or Chevrolet, there is an easy way of making sure all is well and satisfy your peace of mind for just £35. Trained technicians at participating retailers within these networks can put your car through a Winter Safety Check and Top Up, including an external and internal vehicle inspection, plus checks on the underside of the car and under-bonnet.

It covers all safety-critical components, including lights and electrics, brakes, hubs, wheels and tyres.

Although the legal minimum tread depth is 1.6 mm, both RoSPA and Roadsafe recommend that tyres are replaced when the depth falls to 3mm. Research has shown that tyres with a tread depth of 3mm offer 25 per cent better grip in wet conditions than those worn down to the legal limit.

Vauxhall, SAAB and Chevrolet retailers regularly benchmark their tyre prices on all well known brands against the best prices advertised locally by other outlets. Before fitting any new tyres, the technicians will check the tread depth and condition to make sure you do need replacements.

All sizes, speed ratings and tread patterns can be supplied to meet the needs of owners of current and older models. The prices quoted include a new valve, wheel balancing and environmentally friendly disposal of your old tyres.

Once the Winter Safety Check visual inspection has been completed, fluid levels will be checked and topped up where necessary. Engine oil, brake fluid, coolant and screenwash are all covered.

The Winter Safety Check offer at participating Vauxhall MasterFit, SAAB and Chevrolet service departments runs until the end of March 2009. No appointment is necessary – simply drive to your nearest authorised retailer and have your car inspected and your tyres checked while you wait. Any additional work identified during the Winter Safety Check will be itemised and the costs of rectification fully quoted.

You will also receive a free Winter Car Care Kit, containing a Sonax window de-icer aerosol, bottle of antifreeze and clear view concentrate, an ice scraper and a chamois pad.

Hilux Conquers The Snow To Claim Second 'Pole' Position
EPSOM, United Kingdom –: Is there no driving challenge beyond the scope of Toyota’s mighty Hilux? The legendary pick-up has completed a journey across Antarctica to the South Pole, further proving the go-anywhere qualities that helped it become the first car to be driven to the Magnetic North Pole in the 2007 Top Gear Polar Challenge.

The expedition also demonstrated that Hilux has advantages over snowcats when it comes to being a sensible transport choice. It can travel much faster, uses significantly less fuel and can carry more passengers – in more comfort, to boot. And thanks to the quality of Toyota’s 3.0 D-4D engine, CO2 emissions are lower.

Hilux models were requested as support vehicles for the Amundsen Omega3 South Pole Race, a 483-mile skiing challenge celebrating the historic rival expeditions of explorers Roald Amundsen and Robert Scott. The Hilux Double Cabs were prepared for the extreme conditions by Arctic Trucks, the Reykjavik-based company which also fettled the Top Gear challenge machines.

Towing custom-built trailers, the Hilux at times had to cope with loads up to 2.5 tonnes – 1.5 tonnes more than their specified capacity, and were also newly fitted with a system to melt snow while on the move, using heat from the engine. Pressed into service to ferry supplies, scientists and team support groups and to carry out reconnaissance duties, the four Hilux have covered more than 2,000 miles each across the rough, frozen terrain in temperatures as low as -30C.

Hilux has already proved its worth as a workhorse of choice for scientists based at Camp Novo and other Antarctic research stations, and is being reviewed as the solution for future transport requirements in the area, demonstrating beyond doubt its ability to tackle the world’s toughest environments.

Fleets Can Cut Costs With Fiat Eco:Drive
SLOUGH, United Kingdom –: Fleet buyers purchasing Fiat models equipped with the manufacturer’s eco:Drive technology can expect to change driver behaviour and cut fuel costs and emissions by up to 15 per cent.

eco:Drive downloads information about the way the car is being driven – including speed, gear changes, acceleration and deceleration – to a data stick plugged into a USB port inside the car. Drivers can then transfer this data to their computer via a free tool available from Fiat’s website, which enables them to see for themselves exactly how their driving style is affecting performance and emissions.

Additionally, a series of tutorials advises on techniques that drivers can adopt to reduce fuel consumption, thereby cutting costs, and sets targets for improvements, per journey and over a set period. Each time new data is uploaded to the site, the performance is graded so that drivers can chart their progress.

“Drivers can see exactly how much fuel they are using and what emissions are being generated by their driving style,” says Adam Pumfrey, Fiat UK’s Fleet and Remarketing Director. “Then they can receive advice on how to reach targets for improvement.

“In a fleet market context, individual drivers making small savings can have a positive effect in reducing the overall fleet carbon footprint and generate significant cost savings across the business.”

The website also features eco:Ville, an online community that shows drivers how other users are doing, along with the global CO2 savings that are being generated.

Jaguar Land Rover CEO Calls For Urgent Action On Car Support Package
GAYDON, United Kingdom –: Jaguar Land Rover's Chief Executive Officer, David Smith, has urged immediate action by the Government to deliver the aid package promised to the UK's automotive industry if serious industrial consequences are to be averted.

TG Small Car Guide
Shock news: Clarkson has admitted that small, economical cars are actually better fun than big, lairy powerful ones.

It’s true. In his column in the new issue of Top Gear magazine (available in all less-than-reputable newsagents), JC writes:

“In the real world, away from the wide open spaces of the TG test track, a Fiat 500 is much more fun to drive than a Zonda. A Zonda will pull more men, but on a bumpy B road, you’ll be wearing a bigger smile in the Fiat, I promise. Or a Mini…”

He’s not ill or anything, honest. Truth is, it’s a great time in history for tiny, great-handling cars. Cars that won’t blow your budget, hobble you with eye-watering running costs or force you to remortgage your kidneys to raise some capital if someone bumps into you in the local multi-storey.

To remind you of all the good stuff out there, we’ve collected together the best little cars on sale today (and one or two ropey ones, just to be on the safe side) and metaphorically glued them all together in a lovely click-through gallery.

It’s definitely much more exciting than that Zonda R. Honest.
