His death defying courage after being impaled by a five-foot iron angle notwithstanding, 23-year-old Supratim Dutta has always been a survivor, says his family.
"It is nothing but extraordinary a man tolerating such pain for two hours. With the angle still inside him, he had the courage to call for help, it is astounding. What was even more surprising is that he did not lose his consciousness. Doctors have not given any time frame for him to get back to normal," Sukumar Dutta, Supratim's father, said.
The software executive's strong will to survive has left even the doctors at AIIMS admiring. "He is a real fighter and though he was attended by a group of expert doctors it was his courage which mattered the most," said Dr M C Mishra, chief medical officer, Jai Prakash Narayan Apex Trauma Centre, AIIMS.
Recovering fast
"Though his seven vital organs-liver, stomach, spleen, left lung, diaphragm and intestine-were left damaged by the iron angle he is recovering fast and is talking normally. Now, the only danger he faces is from any kind of infection and if that is ruled out he can live a normal life," a doctor said. What Dutta actually complained of after the surgery was just a sore throat as a result of the anaesthesia.
Though he will have to be on medication to recover from the damage done to the internal organs doctors were surprised to see an extra small spleen inside his body. Dr Sushma Sagar, one of the two main surgeons who operated on Supratim, said, "The spleen was badly damaged and we had to take it out. Luckily, Dutta had an extra small spleen which we left inside."
The complete surgical procedure in itself has become a talking point in the medical fraternity. "The operation was carried out with the patient sitting in upright position and doctors were holding him from the back side after giving him the anaesthesia," a senior doctor of AIIMS said.
