The Delhi Transport Corporation is planning to ply low-floor buses but not air-conditioned buses on U-Special routes.

DTC chairman and managing director Ramesh Negi told MiD DAY on Wednesday, "Before finalising any route or special service for these buses, we have to look into its viability."

Air-conditioned buses will not be viable, if run as U special service.

Student wings hopeful

Senior DTC officials said, they have got a number of representations from student wings for the introduction air-conditioned low-floor buses and ordinary low-floor buses.

Considering this, the DTC was mulling to start a few low-floor buses for the university.

"We are contemplating to introduce some low-floor buses for varsity special service. In next few months, when we get delivery of more low-floor buses we might ply some buses for varsities services," Negi said.

Meanwhile, DTC started ordinary 72 universities special buses on Wednesday for the various colleges as the new academic session at Delhi University started with around 42,000 freshers in both the north and south campus.

Fleet expansion

The DTC officials said that they would expand the fleet in August.

The officials said, around 15 per cent of the total number of students use varsities' special services run by the corporation.

"Currently, the college authorities are busy in admission process. When we get the exact figure, we would decide the number of buses to be introduced for the universities," a DTC official said.

Restoration of U busesPresident of Students Union of Delhi University, Amrita Bahiri, said that their foremost demand was the restoration of all the university special buses.

"Around 40 per cent of the buses that were introduced last year have been withdrawn by the corporation. First, buses should be provided to all the colleges. Secondly, the corporation should also start air-conditioned low-floor or low-floor buses for the students," Bahiri said.
