More trouble for new rakes

MUMBAI: It is becoming increasingly evident that the fancy new rakes procured under the Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP) are plagued with technical problems. On Wednesday, two trains came to a halt-at Dadar and Nallasopara, respectively-because of software problems

There have been more than 63 motor failure problems till January. As reported by TOI, railway officials have admitted that the new trains are facing technical problems. Officials now say Siemens, which supplies crucial components, has identified the cause of the glitches.

The firm admits that the bearing of the traction motor cannot take the load of overcrowded suburban trains in Mumbai. Siemens also acknowledges problems with the software.

On Wednesday, one of the new rakes-travelling from Churchgate to Borivli-developed a snag at Dadar around 2.42 pm and crawled to Bandra, where its journey was terminated. This caused chaos at Dadar. The other train remained stationary at Nallasopara from 3.45 pm to 4 pm before it slowly reached its destination, Virar. Trains ran late by 15-20 minutes due to the snags.

In a letter to MRVC, Siemens has said there is a problem and also suggested solutions. "They have sent a team to resolve the issue," said P C Sehgal, MRVC managing director.

"Siemens is working on a new software. Till now, 3-4 versions have been changed. Another version will be introduced by this month-end," said an official.
