Pull down illegal political banners: HC

MUMBAI: Political hoardings that have cropped up in every nook and corner of the city have come under the scanner of the Bombay High Court. A division bench of Justices J N Patel and Vijaya Kapse-Tahilramani on Wednesday ordered the BMC to pull down all such illegal banners.

The judges asked the civic body to remove the hoardings in a phased manner and directed the superintendent in charge of licenses to file a report on the progress of the drive in six weeks time.

The court noted that hoardings announcing birthdays of politicians had cropped up all over the city. "Some of these hoardings are dangerous. If they fall, it could lead to a serious accident," said Justice Patel.

Responding to a query from the court senior advocate K K Singhvi, counsel for the BMC said that it was the corporation's policy to remove hoardings that have not been issued permissions. This is not the first time that the issue of political hoardings have been addressed by the high court. Three other petitions had dealt with the matter and the court had ordered the corporation to pull down illegal political banners.
